Cube Ubuntu 3D Desktop

This tutorial will explain how to achieve a 3D desktop cube in Ubuntu using Compiz fusion.

Introduction

Compiz is a windows manager which uses accelerated 3D graphics to to produce stunning desktops using OpenGL technology. It mostly utilizes the Gnome or KDE environment. Compiz has a collection of plug-ins available for a very customisable desktop. Compiz was created following the production of Beryl.

Pre-Requisites

Compiz requires a few pre-requisites before actually installing. But don't worry they are easy enough to apply to your Linux operating system.

Here are the Pre-Requisites

Proper drivers installed for your ATI or nVidia or Intel Graphics card.

If you are using popular graphics card, using the following method should allow Linux to detect and install your graphics drivers for you.

System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.

Installing Compiz

Once your graphics drivers are installed, you are ready to install Compiz. Run the follwing command in your Linux terminal.

sudo apt-get install -y compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-plugins emerald compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main

The -y flag will make sure that "yes" is answered to all questions on the installation process.  Sit back and wait for the software to install.

Once the Installation is complete, Compiz is now Installed!

Once compiz is installed you should be able to find the CompizConfig Settings Manager program listed under:

System > Preferences

This program will allow you to set your Compiz Options. See the screenshot below for what to expect. I have highlighted the option for 3d cube desktop below also.
